Here is an interesting case study about a “monk” who was so devoted to his faith that he wanted himself castrated. Upon reading the study, you find out this guy was a member of The Heaven’s Gate cult, your typical ritualistic suicide group. It just goes to show that fanaticism, whether it be as a part of a “legitimate” religion, or a crazy cult like this, is still insane. Much can be learned because of weirdo Brother David…

Chinese Bishop Jia was arrested again, this time for passing the Pope’s letter on to the underground Catholic churches, and explaining its contents to the church members. In China, Catholics are allowed to attend churches sanctioned by the Chinese government, which do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Catholic Church. Underground churches abound, whose members hold to traditional Catholic beliefs, and deny the Chinese government’s rights to control their freedom of worship. Bishop Jia has been arrested a total of 10 years for opposing government control of the Catholic Church in China.

A televangelist in Florida has been taken off the air after spouting Muslim-hating invectives. He called the Koran a book of lies, and said that the prophet Muhammed was a murdering pedophile. The station claims that the removal of the program was a programming decision, but a local Muslim group is claiming credit for getting him booted.

This is a pretty cool idea. The UK is holding something called the 11 Million Takeover Day. The government is urging businesses and organizations to allow the 11 million children and young people in the UK to take charge for one day. The Methodist Church in Britain has agreed to take part, and will hand over control to kids for the day. If my kids were involved, the church service would only include music and snacks - no sermon.

Jospeh Smith was the founder of Mormonism; Brigham Young was chosen the new leader after Smith’s death, and led the Mormons west to Utah. What I didn’t realize was that Smith’s widow didn’t go with Young, didn’t accept him as the new leader, and therefore Smith’s descendants have not been a part of the Latter Day Saints. Until now. A great-great-granddaughter of Joseph Smith has become the first direct descendant of Smith’s to be baptized into the Church fo Jesus Christ of the Latter-Say Saints. I guess 150 years was how long it took to patch things up.
