Some Catholic archbishop took this prayer conference as an opportunity to jump on his religious soapbox this past week to talk about how religion should never be removed from the public eye. All we non-religious people ask is that you keep your kooky beliefs to yourself. Personally, I think it’s inhumane to leave a baby child in the grass in December…
Efforts to remove religion’s influence from the public square will fail, in large part because faith plays such a major role in most Americans’ lives, the recently appointed Roman Catholic archbishop of Washington said.
Archbishop Donald Wuerl’s comments came at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast on April 13.President Bush was the headline speaker.
Wuerl said the church’s moral theology has helped frame debates over the Iraq war, abortion, embryonic stem cell research, physician-assisted suicide and immigration. Religious faith, Wuerl said, continues to play a significant role in both promoting social justice issues as well as “defending all innocent human life.”
In his address, Wuerl echoed Pope Benedict XVI’s frequent warnings about the threat of secularism.

Apparently there is a poll out in the Islamic world indicating that a majority of them feel that the US is trying to weaken religion. I don’t entirely disagree. I also realize, though, that Islam is working twice as hard to extinguish Christianity… Maybe one day they’ll just cancel out!
More than 70 percent of Egyptians, Pakistanis, Indonesians and Moroccans believe the United States is trying to weaken and divide the Islamic world, a poll released on Tuesday showed.
The survey by WorldPublicOpinion.org also showed more than 40 percent thought that was the primary goal of the U.S.-led war on terrorism, while only 12 percent believed Washington’s aim was to protect the United States from attack.
“While U.S. leaders may frame the conflict as a war on terrorism, people in the Islamic world clearly perceive the U.S. as being at war with Islam,” Steven Kull, editor at the Washington-based group, said in a statement.
The face-to-face survey, of between 1,000 and 1,200 people in each country from December to February, also found about 30 percent approved of attacks on U.S. military in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Gulf.
But 60 percent said suicide bombings were never justified and 67 percent believed Islam was opposed to attacks against civilians.
The last time an upstart Catholic senator decided to run for president we got…Mr. Kerry. Oh well, before that we got John F. Kennedy, a martyr among men and champion of all. These guys now… We’ll, they’re no Jack Kennedy but they do run on different platforms rooter in different interpretations of the Catholic faith.
Presidential contenders Chris Dodd and Sam Brownback — one Democrat, one Republican — demonstrated Monday how their political differences are rooted in their varying interpretations of their shared Catholic faith.
The two senators, appearing jointly at a Boston College forum on faith and politics, differed on abortion rights, civil unions for gay couples and embryonic stem cell research. Nonetheless, they used modest tones to suggest that Democrats and Republicans could bridge such gaps with more tolerance for their opponents’ positions.
While the two Catholics agreed that marriage should be reserved for a man and a woman — not gay couples — they differed in talking about their views on homosexuality.
Dodd, the father of two young girls, said, “I think it’s a good question to ask how you would like your children treated.”
Brownback, however, called homosexual acts immoral — as has the Catholic church — and said sanctioning them threatens the stability of traditional marriage.

Here is an interesting story - A religious group today stood up against the Catholic Church, the US Supreme Court and President Bush for their desire to keep religion in US Healthcare. This group obviously is a sane religious faction with their heads on straight.
A coalition of religious leaders took on the Catholic Church, the U.S. Supreme Court and the Bush administration on Tuesday with a plea to take religion out of health care in the United States.
They said last week’s Supreme Court decision outlawing a certain type of abortion demonstrated that religious belief was interfering with personal rights and the U.S. health care system in general.
The group, calling itself the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, said it planned to submit its proposals to other church groups and lobby Congress and state legislators.
“With the April 18 Supreme Court decision banning specific abortion procedures, concerns are being raised in religious communities about the ethics of denying these services,” the group said in a statement.
